He continues to participate the research work in lab of biocatalysis and bio-nano technology after his retirement in 2001. He founded the Institute of Biochemical Engineering (IBE) in Department of Chemical Engineering ,Tsinghua University in 1985, and became the director of the institute. Under his leadership, research work in fields of bio-separation engineering, mammal/plant cell culture and bio-medical engineering were accomplished by IBE. He was ever the vice dean of Institute of Life Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University and the dean of Life Science and Technology, Beijing Geely University. His research fields include: biocatalysis engineering, bio-separation engineering, biological reaction engineering, supercritical fluid technology and modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. He is the winner of National Science and Technology Progress Award (third prize), the State Board of Education Science and Technology Progress Award (second prize), first prize of Beijing Science and Technology and the China Petrochemical Corporation and Technology Award (third prize, twice). He has more than 200 published articles and more than 30 qualified patents. Meanwhile, he has also participated the writing and publication of 3 academic monographs.
